Croydon August 08 News Letter

NEWSLETTER – AUGUST 2008

Dear Member

IT is not long now before our open show on 7th September and entries will soon be closing on 29th August. If you have not filled in your entry as yet then please do so now and post it to Richard without delay. We had a very good entry last year and with your help we need to keep that again this year and build on it.

My sincere thanks go out to our sponsors who sponsored the show with section rosettes & cash as well as other gifts; Ron Allen, Mick Anzara, Harry Aves, Graham & Pat Dodd, David Harmer, Peter Holman, John Isles, Richard Tessier, Paul Tiller, Terry & Shane Walker, Fred Wright and of course to Janice and myself.

We need helpers on Saturday at 5.00 pm to erect the staging and all day Sunday so please come along and offer assistance. We would appreciate your generosity with raffle prizes, as well as donated birds which must be owner bred & closed rung.

Unfortunately Janice will not be able to be at the show as she is judging in Holland on the same day. I am afraid you will have to put up with me in her place ~ just for this year!

Before our open show we have a return visit to South Eastern BC on 1st September for the Young Bird Ring Competition (Rings 1-15). This is an annual exchange visit between our two clubs and it is their turn to host this competition. The venue is Ringmer Village Hall, Lewes Road, Ringmer, East Sussex. Booking of the birds will be between 7.30 – 8.00 pm and judging will commence at 8.00 pm. It is also their Annual Members Show but we can only participate in the young bird classes and you can enter as many birds in all the colours as long as they are rung between ring numbers 1 to 15. They have the full championship classification in all sections just like our open show classification. Janice and I will be judging the show so please turn up with your birds and support this competition.

Our Young Stock Show in June was well supported with 36 birds benched for Ian Standley to judge. It was Paul Tiller’s Spangle Grey cock that came out the winner for best in show, best any age and best novice any age. Paul also won the award for best any age opposite sex. Patrick Hafee won best young bird in show & best beginner young bird with a Skyblue cock as well as the best young bird opposite sex. Best barrhead went to Shane & Terry Walker. David Harmer won both the champion awards while Brian Gardiner won the beginner any age award. It was good to have a junior exhibiting again and our congratulations are extended to Jordan Holdway for winning both awards.

At the July meeting we had the Home Grown Evening (swapped with the October meeting) and Janice gave a power point presentation about her judging the Australian National in May while Richard talked about “Building an Aviary”.

The September meeting will be an evening with a difference whereby our guest speaker will be Janet Jeffrey and her Birds of Prey. We may also have another guest on that evening.

I was rather disappointed to learn that the June aviary visit to Essex was cancelled at the last minute due to lack of support. It was somewhat embarrassing to have to cancel such a visit. We go out of our way to put a good yearly programme and all that we ask from you is your support.

Please come and support our open show on 7th September.
